Week Six

Hi guys,

So it’s been a busy week.

I was in Melbourne on Friday and Saturday for the Nickelodeon Awards, and also for an appearance at the Knox Shopping Centre.

Had a great time on Friday night meeting family and friends, who I haven’t seen since I’ve been up here – had a lotta fun. Lovely to know I’ve got so much support waiting for me at home. Going to Knox was pretty crazy; I couldn’t believe I was up onstage signing autographs for people, some of whom had been waiting since 5am! I found it bizarre: people would shout my name, and then I’d turn around and they’d be smiling with a camera, so happy I’d looked over at them. We all really appreciate everyone coming out to see us.

Then it was off to the Nickelodeon Awards, which was just as crazy. It was cool to hang out in the holding room with all these stars that were involved in the awards, like Rove and Jane Turner from Kath and Kim. Then Ricki-Lee invited us onstage and slimed us, which was actually quite fun. It was cold after about a minute though, and quite disgusting in my hair, but it was definitely a good laugh. We also won the So Hot Right Now award– thanks guys! We really appreciate it!

Then it was time to say farewell to Melbourne and head back to Sydney for the Sony Charity Ball, which was to raise money for charity - great to be involved with it. I got to meet Shannon Noll, he was a sweetie.

I was happy with my performance for Rock Night. However, watching it back, even though I felt like I was intensely immersed in the song, I don’t think you could see it in my eyes. I need to remember to overact sometimes, to get the point across. I will try my hardest to open up to everyone as best I can, I’m just not really sure how to do that. I feel that comes easiest in my own songs; my lyrics are very open, and you’ll know about me, and know that it’s real by the way I sing. I have difficulty showing myself through cover songs.

Really pumped for this week. I’m singing a cool, funky song and I hope I can do it justice. I’ve also got a cool dress to wear, which I’m really excited about! I want to have fun with it, get out of my comfort zone and take on the character of the song, own the stage and be in charge, like Guy Sebastian suggested I do in my workshop with him.

Thanks again for voting and watching! I’m so happy to still be here, and I love hearing all your messages. Hi to all my friends in London, you guys are great, and I miss you heaps. And a big Happy Birthday to my sister Jenny, who’s turning 27 on Tuesday. Love you Jenny!

Thanks guys, see you next time,

Sophie

Week Five

Hi guys,

How you all going? Thanks for all your support this week and for keeping me out of the Bottom Three.

I really enjoyed Sunday night’s show. I liked the song and being able to put my own ideas into the song. It was great to have Mark and Rex on the guitar and double bass with me onstage. It made me feel a lot more at home and I was able to really enjoy the performance and feel comfortable. Really loved the dress too – I think it’s my favourite outfit so far.

Was really relieved and pleased to be safe on Monday night, especially since I changed the Abba song into my style. I was a bit worried, but it seems people liked it and are liking my style and my sound. Every week is a shock, but this week it was a shock to have the three girls in there – especially Chrislyn and Ro, as they haven’t been in the Bottom Three before.

It was a shame to lose Madam - she has an amazing voice, and she hadn’t really had the opportunity yet to do her best, since the first week. I think she’s a lot better than what some people have seen. When we go somewhere now we feel like someone’s missing, then we count it up and we’re all there. It’s a bit weird.

Really happy with my song for Rock Week. I love listening to rock and I think I’m gonna keep my song pretty close to the original. INXS were fantastic and fun to work with. They’re true rock stars – a bit crazy and mad. They had great ideas in the workshop, and it was a privilege to work with them.

Can’t wait to go to Melbourne this Friday and catch up with all my family and friends – it’ll be weird to be back in Melbourne with all the Idols!

Thanks for all the support guys - keep up the good work. Missing everyone back in London and I love hearing from you guys.

I hope you all enjoy this week’s rock song!

Week Four

Hi guys,

First of all, thanks so much to everyone for getting me out of the Bottom Three. I really appreciate it, and I hope you guys enjoy this week’s song as well.

I’m really happy with how Sunday night’s performance went – I felt so much more comfortable singing songs closer to my musical style. I feel like I connected with the audience more than I have so far, and people got a sense of who I am. I’ve decided that as long as I’m in here, I’m gonna keep having the same approach every week, and I’m not going to be afraid to just stand on-stage. I don’t have to make it a big stage show to get my point across. And I’m not going to compare myself to everyone else – what they’re doing and how they’re singing has got nothing to do with me, and what I do.

I was pretty shocked to see Tom leave on Monday – I thought he had such a big fan base. I’m happy Teale and Madam are still here - they definitely deserve to be. I think Tom did such a good job on his last performance. He showed a lot of class hugging the judges and walking into the crowd. Well done Tom.

We all went off to Bondi on Saturday, which was really great. We got to chill out together, have a bit of food and head to the beach. A lot of people stopped to say hello and take photos; it was such a positive, happy experience. It was nice to go to the pub afterwards and watch the AFL Grand Final with the guys.

Really happy with my Abba song. I’ve changed the style a bit, but I’m not gonna compete with ‘Abba disco’. It’ll be a fun and challenging night for everyone, and very entertaining from a viewer’s point-of-view, especially the boys doing Abba hits - should be good fun.

So happy people have really responded to this new approach I’m taking to the show – this is me, it’s what I’ll be doing when the show finishes and what you’ll see when you come to my gigs.

I can’t wait to sing this week’s song!

Thanks again guys, see on Sunday,

Sophie

Week Three

Hi guys,

Thank you so much to everyone who voted and kept me in the competition. I really appreciate it and I’m really looking forward to this week. Expect something different from the previous few weeks…

I was really, really upset that Brooke left. She is a great girl and amazing performer, and I’ll think she’ll do really well in the music industry.

I really want to focus now on retaining my original style that I love, which is playing guitar and singing from the heart. I met up again with Darren this week and had a great chat to him about the experience so far, and my first two performances. We both agree that I’ve gone off track, trying to be different things that I thought people wanted me to be. I was trying to put on a stage show performance when that’s not what I do or what I want to do. He really helped me focus and remember why I entered this competition. I don’t feel yet that I’ve really come across as who I am, and I want people to know why I love singing and why I sing. The songs I’ve been singing don’t show that yet. I think it’s about finding right songs.

I want my career to be about singing songs about my life – telling people stories and giving them a piece of me through song, and I should be showing them that through this TV show. I guess I didn’t think that would be exciting enough, but now I realise it doesn’t matter and I’ve just gotta do what I do.

Thanks for all the lovely messages on this website – I really appreciate it. I hope you guys all like what I’ve done with this week’s song!

Big kisses to all the crew back in London, I miss you guys heaps!

Week Two

Hey everyone,

The Final 12 performance on the bigger stage was a bit of a challenge. I’d kinda gotten used to working the other stage and the way the audience was set out. I felt good in rehearsals, but during the actual show, it wasn’t the same vibe. I don’t think it was one of my best performances. I think I sang it OK, but it was a bit forgettable, maybe. That song is such a good song, because it tells a story, and to chop it down, to 1.5 minutes, you lose that. It didn’t have a big enough climax, and it’s not such a vocally challenging song. The judge’s comments were good and valid. They talked about diction. When I sing I have a tendency to roll my words into one. You’re telling a story, so it’s important people hear each word. My singing teacher always says “Diction, diction, diction”, so it was no real surprise!

I was feeling a little bit nervous before Monday night’s announcement, as I knew I hadn’t performed my best, and everyone else had really stepped up and delivered some knockout performances. I was feeling wary about my place in the Final 12. Obviously when you hear your name being read out, you get disappointed, but I made sure I picked myself up straight away, and got out there to sing my heart out. I enjoyed singing a second time; I remembered why I chose that song. The rest was out of my hands. I felt a weird numbness waiting for the final verdict as you can’t feel happy or sad because you don’t know if you’re going to go. I was relieved I didn’t go home, but it’s sad now there are only 11 of us and that Jonny had to go. The idea that someone is gonna leave each week seems really harsh. We all have fun together during the week, so it made me remember how important it is to give 100% every time I sing. I can’t relax or I’ll get kicked out, I want to constantly be doing the best show I can do. It made me pumped for next week. I’d prefer to be over the top rather than under, so that’s what I plan to do. I’m gonna go out there and kill it.

The weirdest thing that happened this week was singing in Westpoint Blacktown: all those people screaming our names, the way we were ushered onstage with security guards, it made me realise how real this all is. It’s like we live in this bubble, and they let us out of the bubble. You should’ve heard the noise when Tom came out – it was like oh my gosh!

I’m really excited about this week’s song – I’m looking forward to putting on a good show. Thanks to everyone who voted for me – I’m so happy to still be in the competition, I really appreciate you guys keeping me in here. I have a lot more to show you and I’m really looking forward to doing it!

Week One

Hey everyone,

Thanks for checking out my blog.

So it all happened pretty quickly, getting into the Final 12, and I’m still getting used to it all. We’ve been really busy doing things since Monday night – we’ve done photo shoots for different magazines, and we did a Mazda commercial yesterday, which I really enjoyed but I couldn’t whistle, so I had to mime my whistling parts!

Got my first taste of meeting the media on Monday night at a launch party. It was so weird having people call out your name, ask for photographs, and know things about you without having to ask, like knowing I was from London, wondering if I’m gonna stay after Idol and stuff. It was just a bit strange!

I’m really looking forward to singing again on Sunday night. I’m not sure what I’m wearing yet but I’m looking forward to getting together a new, different outfit. I enjoy the whole hair and makeup thing and I wanna have a different look each week and really adapt to the themes. If you have any ideas for looks you think would suit me, send me a fan message cuz I’ll be sure to read them.

It’s fun living with all the other Idols – we’re getting along really well. I’m sharing with Brooke and Chrislyn. It’s early days and no bad habits to speak of yet, but I’ll let you know the goss as it happens!

I was hoping the judges would like my rendition of  “Satisfaction” - I changed it a bit, and was happy it got a good response. My outfit would have been something new to them, cuz they haven’t seen me play the sexy role yet, but I love wearing cool heels. I was really happy to be picked as a Wild Card, cuz I really didn’t want to leave the show yet, and was chuffed that you guys out there voted me in.

I’m really missing all the guys back in London – shout-outs to Megan, Lina, Astra, Clara, Dom, James and all the pub crew. Hope you guys are having a great summer over there, really miss you and when are you coming to Australia to support me?

Thanks to everyone who has been sending me messages about liking my original song – that’s really important to me. I’ve got plenty more to show you when I get the chance!

Thanks again for all the votes, keep it up guys – you’re the best!

Sophie.
