Ricki-Lee spent time overseas writing her new album - Hear No, See No, Speak No – which is set to be released in November. The first single, “Don’t Miss You” is an “empowering break-up anthem,” explains Ricki-Lee proudly.
“Everybody knew I’d recently been through a break up and I had to write about it and express it,” says Ricki-Lee of the writing process for her new album. “Don’t Miss You” was written the first day Ricki-Lee had arrived in New York. “I woke up that day and I just felt really good, I felt happy,” recalls Ricki-Lee.
“I’d been travelling around the world and I’d been really living for the first time in a long time, going out and having fun, like the song talks about. I wanted to say I’m doing this amazing stuff and travelling the world and for the first time, I don’t miss you. I actually feel OK and wow, look at all this stuff I’m doing!”
Ricki-Lee is keen to explain that the song’s sentiment isn’t a spiteful one but more of a celebration of making it through some tough times, “A lot of people say ‘Oh, it’s a bit nasty’ but the song isn’t about him; I’m talking about myself and how I started to feel good again - feeling strong, confident, empowered and happy!”
The video for “Don’t Miss You” features Ricki-Lee and her mates living it up on motorbikes, boats and at rooftop parties, and reflects the song’s positivity for her. “People can take the song whatever way they choose to take it but I wanted to represent it the way I see it,” she says. “And that’s me having a great time, breaking free and having fun.”
For Ricki-Lee, having her friends with her when she was shooting the video for “Don’t Miss You” was important. “I’m really lucky, I’ve got incredible friends,” she smiles. “I had all my best friends on set with me, they were a part of the video and my friends are what got me through those difficult times.”
As well as her new album, Ricki-Lee is also excited to be back working on Idol as a co-host. “We’ve got an incredibly strong group of contestants this year,” says Ricki-Lee. “I’m so proud of them. It’s going to be an amazing show when we get to the Top 12. Two hours of live TV on a Sunday night, it’s really exciting!”
As always, Ricki-Lee will be on hand to support the contestants any way she can. “I just love hearing them all sing! I’m friends with a lot of them on Facebook and they jump on and chat with me. That’s my number one priority, being there for them and making sure they have as much advice and support as they need. Anything I can do to help, that’s my job!”
