Marcia and Dicko then revealed the judges had chosen Casey Barnes and Tim Johnston and our Final 12 was complete!
Tonight the Final 12 were performing songs of their choice. Ashleigh Toole hit the stage with Kelly Clarkson’s “Miss Independent”. Marcia told Ashleigh she had walked out like she owned the stage.
Scott Newnham got the girls in the audience dancing again with his version of “Come Together”. Sliding on his knees and high-fiving the mosh pit, Scott definitely looked comfortable on stage. Dicko told Scott he doesn’t have a clue what he’s doing on stage – it’s all instinct and Dicko said that’s the best thing about Scott.
Casey Barnes rocked out with his guitar as he sang Powderfinger’s “On My Mind”. Dicko put Casey on the spot by asking him what were three unique things about him as a performer, but Marcia reassured Casey that she thinks a lot of Idol contestants work it out week by week.
Hayley Warner sang “Light Surrounding You” by Evermore. Dicko told Hayley he’s glad Australia put her in the Final 12 because she’s captivating. Jay Dee observed Hayley needs to lose the tension from her shoulders when she’s performing.
James Johnston performed The Fray’s “How To Save A Life”. Marcia liked his metered interpretation and Dicko said it was a good trick how James gave it the country music treatment at the beginning before turning his performance into something different altogether.
Sabrina Batshon threw herself into Michael Jackson’s “Earth Song” and Dicko told Sabrina he finds it electrifying when she cuts loose. Nathan Brake sang OneRepublic’s “Stop and Stare” and Dicko liked his song choice, as did Marcia.
Next up Stan Walker took to the stage with Rihanna’s “Umbrella” and obviously had a ball doing so. Marcia said Stan has one of the most natural voices of this year and she loves his versions of songs. Dicko called Stan a “bundle of joy” and said it’d only been two weeks, but he’d missed Stan singing.
Toby Moulton sang “Creep” by Radiohead. Dicko commented a Chris Isaak song would suit him better than an “emo anthem” written 15 years before emo even existed. Toby simply said he wanted to sing a song by his favourite band.
Kim Cooper gave “Best Of You” by the Foo Fighters the unplugged treatment before the band upped the ante. Dicko said it was a “terrific effort.” In another case of our Final 12 lads singing songs made popular by female artists, Tim Johnston performed “Halo” by Beyonce. Marcia said she liked Tim putting his own stamp on it.
Kate Cook got well into “Stuck In The Middle With You” and so did the mosh pit. Dicko observed Kate loves people and they love her in return, and that it’s party time every time she takes the stage
Our first Final 12 show over, next week it’s rock night with first lady of rock, Suzi Quatro joining us as guest mentor to show the Idols how it’s done!
