Stan, Nathan, Hayley and James opened the show with Starship’s “We Built This City”, a fitting beginning for our two hours of power!

Before the Final 3 could sink their teeth into their three chosen songs, we had to sadly say goodbye to one Idol. As there were only four contestants left, there was just a bottom two tonight - Hayley and Nathan. Nathan Brake   went home.

Andrew welcomed our guest judge, Pete Wentz from Fall Out Boy and then James Johnston   hit the stage with Toto’s “Hold The Line”. Pete told James afterwards live music is all about interaction with the crowd and James did an excellent job of it.

Hayley Warner   sang “One” by U2 and Pete encouragingly said her career could soar to great heights if she keeps working on it.

Stan Walker   back flipped his way onto the stage for an action-packed performance - “Eye Of The Tiger” by Survivor. Pete revealed that one of our recent guest judges, Joel Madden had told him Stan was the one to watch. Pete said it was an awesome performance and told Stan to give him a call if he has nowhere else to go. That’s what you wanna hear from a man who has his own record label!

James settled in with his guitar for a power ballad, Extreme’s “More Than Words”. Jay Dee said he hates the song but he likes James in stripped back performance mode and Dicko told James it was a perfect song for him.

“New Sensation” by INXS was Hayley’s next pick and Dicko thought it was too straight a rendition of the song for Hayley’s unique voice. Pete liked how Hayley interacted with both the audience and the song itself, telling her that’s what takes a performance to a higher level.

A suited up Stan performed “It’s A Man’s Man’s Man’s World” and after the applause finally died down, Marcia told Stan that James Brown would have been proud of how he sang his song. Pete said Stan “absolutely nailed it”.

James rocked out with his guitar for “Learning To Fly” by the Foo Fighters. While Pete missed the distorted guitars of the original, he liked how James had obviously had fun on stage with the song.

“Bittersweet Symphony” by The Verve was Hayley’s last song. Jay Dee said Hayley had saved the best till last, while Pete observed that since rock n roll can be such a boy’s club, it was nice to see a girl owning it and rocking it for herself.

The last performance of the night was Stan’s rendition of “Amazing Grace”, one of his favourite songs ever. Afterwards, Dicko simply said it was Stan’s night tonight. Marcia said Stan sings from a very special place - his heart - while Stan was pleased to hear that Jay Dee thinks Stan finally has the focus he needed.

Tune in next Sunday at 7.30pm when Michael Bublé joins Idol for the unveiling of the final 2 for 2009 and your final 2 each perform their winner’s single!
