All round cheeky Irishman, Brian McFadden was back as a guest mentor and judge. Brian had encouraged Sabrina during their workshop to open up more when she sang “"When Love Takes Over" and after her upbeat effort, Jay Dee told her it was great she didn’t internalise the performance.
Toby slowed proceedings down with a stripped back version of A-Ha’s “Take On Me.” Brian said it was a beautiful performance and Jay Dee thought it was a great song choice by Toby. Dicko noted it was that kind of performance which took Damien Leith all the way.
Kim Cooper got down with Lady GaGa’s “Just Dance” and Jay Dee said he liked her hardworking attitude – he just wants to see her voice go from good to great. Stan Walker rocked out again with Silverchair’s “Straight Lines”, prompting Brian to say he had been worried about Stan singing another rock song but he can “sing the crap out of anything.”
After James Johnston sang “Drops of Jupiter” by Train, Dicko declared the performance a bit too sickly sweet for his tastes. Brian disagreed, saying he enjoyed it and he thinks James is starting to grow. A suited-up Scott Newnham tackled Seal’s “Kiss From A Rose” and afterwards Brian told him to pick songs he feels comfortable with. He said he thinks Scott lacks confidence when it comes to big moments in songs.
Nathan Brake worked the stage, singing “Since You’ve Been Gone” by Kelly Clarkson. Marcia told him he’s doing well transitioning from theatre performances to rocking a stage. Kate’s heartfelt performance of Stevie Nicks’ “Landslide” earned her much admiration from the judges, who liked seeing a more introspective, vulnerable side to Kate after all her party-starting songs. Brian said Kate’s was the most believable performance of the night and he felt every word she sang.
Tim Johnston sang "What Goes Around…Comes Around" and the judges didn’t think it was the best song choice for him. Tim explained a past heartbreak gives the song meaning for him and JT is one of his favourite artists.
Hayley donned heels for an RnB performance when she sang "Leave (Get Out)" by JoJo. Jay Dee thought she pulled it off, even with her “Charlie Chaplin” dance moves and Dicko also thought she did a great job.
Stay tuned for 80s night next Sunday at 7:30pm when guest mentor and judge Ross Wilson joins us on Australian Idol.
