Cal Wilson is well known to audiences around Australia – and her native New Zealand – for her work on TV shows Thank God You're Here, The Wedge, Rove and her radio show The Akmal Show with Cal Wilson.

This year she has turned her attention to Australian Idol, with Idol Insider a live behind-the-scenes Idol experience exclusive to Telstra Next G users. The show runs before, during, and after regular episodes of Australian Idol so that viewers don't miss a thing, and Cal doesn't miss a thing either!

And while gigs such as Thank God You're Here have Cal thinking on her feet, Idol Insider has tested her even further. "Improv is where I started out," she says, "but interviewing is a new skill for me which I'm just learning on the radio and doing this, so it's been good training."

However being live, things don't always go to plan. "There was the time when Dave the producer was telling me to fill [time]," Cal explains. "But instead of using the fill signal he used the wind-up single, so I stopped interviewing Kelly Clarkson live, to your Telstra Next G mobile, and we still have 45 seconds to go! I went, ‘Oh, we're on the air' and Kelly just interviewed herself. She was an automated pop star. So that's probably the worst moment."

The best moments, of course, have been hanging out with the Idols themselves. "I really like doing the quizzes with the guys," Cal pips. "When Daniel [Mifsud] and Matt [Corby] were together they were great, they bounced of each other really well and they were always fun to play with. But now it's getting weird and freaky because there are only three of them!"

Speaking of freaky … how about those judges? "It's been great, actually," says Cal of handling the feisty panel. "I was a little bit weary of Kyle, I thought he was going to be the tiger shark, but he's been great. I loved his performance [of "Just A Gigolo"], that was hilarious. It was the most surreal moment to be talking to Matt backstage and turn around and go, ‘Kyle's singing!' It's was great - he just owned the stage."

Not surprisingly, Cal has found herself getting attached to the performers, and she suspects it will only get worse. "I really got attached to Ben McKenzie," she admits. "I just found Ben really funny and I loved that at 17 he was so motivated and he's got a finger in a thousand pies and he's just such a character. The week that he went I surprised myself by discovering I was crouched on the ground with my hands on my head! There hasn't been an actual cry yet, but there probably will be next week."
